John L. Marshall
John L. Marshall, PhD, is a Distinguished Scientist at ZINK Imaging, where he is a member of the Chemical Synthesis Group. His responsibilities include execution, direction, and scale-up of synthetic chemistry that enables performance of Zero-Ink media. He is a co-discoverer of the amorphochromic dye phenomenon and co-inventor of some dyes and other components of the media.

Prior to joining ZINK Imaging, Dr. Marshall worked for Polaroid Corporation for 26 years. His career began in process research for large-scale-manufacturing. From 1992 to 2005 he was involved in the development of several types of digital imaging media. He served a role in the discovery and scale-up of some near-infrared absorbing dyes for the Sunspot laser direct thermal imaging system, as a synthetic chemist and director of synthetic chemistry for the Acid Amplified Imaging photosensitive media project (where he was co-inventor of novel sensitizer dyes, supersensitizers, and image dyes), and was a co-inventor and lead synthetic chemist for the Opal two-second print photo kiosk media. He holds 20 U. S. patents for this work.

Before working for Polaroid Corporation, Dr. Marshall worked for SISA, Inc. performing pharmaceutical synthesis related to opiates and cannabinoids. His research interests include the development of new synthetic methods, heterocyclic synthesis, dye chemistry, and process chemistry. He has published 11 scientific articles and presented talks on 15 research topics.

Dr. Marshall received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Organic Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also served a two-year postdoctoral NIH fellowship at the University of New Hampshire.
